Safe Drinking Water Access

A deep-dive into the global progress and remaining challenges of Target 6.1.

Understanding Safe Access

Safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030 is the primary target of SDG 6. It implies that everyone should have access to water that is free from contamination and available on premises.

  • Safely Managed: Located on premises, available when needed, and free from contamination.
  • Basic Service: An improved source within 30 minutes round trip.
  • Limited Service: An improved source exceeding 30 minutes.

Despite improvements, the disparity between urban and rural access remains significant.

Region Access to Safely Managed (%) Pop. Without Basic Service (M)
Sub-Saharan Africa 32% 410M
Central & South Asia 61% 180M
Latin America 74% 55M
Global Average 71% 2.2B (Total)

Current Challenges

Several barriers prevent universal access to safe water:

  1. Urbanization: Growing cities straining existing infrastructure.
  2. Contamination: Chemical and biological pollutants in groundwater.
  3. Economics: High cost of maintenance for rural water systems.
